Body Markup

• Comment - <!-- ... --> - This tag will be ignored when displaying any HTML formatted text.

• Line Break - <BR> - This tag will force a new line in a block of text.

• Horizontal Rule - <HR align="left" size="2" width="80%"> - This tag breaks the text into two blocks and places a horizontal line between the two blocks of text.  Three attributes can be specified with this tag.  The first is an alignment tag which allows the line to be aligned left, center, or right.  The default alignment is left.  The second sets the thickness of the line.  The default is a line that is one pixel thick.  The last attribute sets the width of the line.  If the value of this attribute is a number, it specifies the length of the line in pixels.  If a percent sign follows the number, the line fills that percentage of the space available.  The default value for width is 100%.

• Headings - <H1 align="left">...</H1> - This tag can specify headings from 1 to 6.  As the numbers become larger the font size becomes smaller.  Using a heading also forces the beginning of a new block of text.  An optional alignment attribute can be specified for this tag.  This allows the text to be left, center, or right aligned.  The default alignment is left.

• Paragraph - <P align="left">...</P> - This tag starts a new paragraph.  An optional alignment attribute can be specified for this tag.  This allows the text to be left, center, or right aligned.  The default alignment is left.

• Division - <Div align="left">...</Div> - This tag starts a new division or section.  An optional alignment attribute can be specified for this tag.  This allows the text to be left, center, or right aligned.  The default alignment is left.

• Blockquote - <Blockquote align="left">... </Blockquote> - This tag is used to format a quote by indenting the text

Character Markup

• Bold - <B>...</B> - This tag shift the text into a bold font of the same size.

• Big - <BIG>...</BIG> - This tag changes the current font to a larger size.

• Citation - <CITE>...</CITE> - This tag shifts the text into an italic font of the same size.

• Code - <CODE>...</CODE> - This tag changes the text into a monospaced font of the same size.

• Emphasis - <EM>...</EM> - This tag changes the text into an italic font of the same size.

• Font - <FONT color="#FF00FF" face="Serif" size="+2">...</FONT> - This tag allows the font to be changed.  Any or all of the attributes of the font can be specified to get the right effect for displaying text.  The color of the font is specified through the color attribute by first placing a # sign followed by six hexadecimal numbers.  The first two hexadecimal numbers specify the intesity red, the second two specify the intesity of green, and the last two specify the intensity of blue.  The face atttribute can use one of the following values, Serif, SanSerif, MonoSpaced, and sets the font type to be displayed.  The size attribute allows the size of the font to be enlarged through the use of a '+' and a number or reduced through the use of a '-' and a number.

• Italics - <I>...</I> - This tag changes the text into an italic font of the same size.

• Keyboard - <KBD>...</KBD> - This tag sets the text into a monospaced font of the same size.

• Strike - <S>...</S> - This tag places a horizontal line through the text placed between the tags.

• Sample - <SAMP>...</SAMP> - This tag changes the text into a monospaced font of the same size.

• Small - <SMALL>...</SMALL> - This tag changes the current font to a smaller size.

• Strong - <STRONG>...</STRONG> - This tag shifts the text into a bold font of the same size.

• Subscript - <SUB>...</SUB> - This tag reduces the size of the font and shifts it downward relative to the other text.

• Superscript - <SUP>...</SUP> - This tag reduces the size of the font and shifts it upward relative to the other text.

• Teletype - <TT>...</TT> - This tag changes the text into a monospaced font of the same size.

• Underline - <U>...</U> - This tag places a line under the text placed between the tags.

• Variable - <VAR>...</VAR> - This tag changes the text into an italic font of the same size.

Other Markup

• Image - <IMG src="man.gif" align="left" alt="missing image" border="2" height="20 hspace="5" vspace="5" width="40"> - This tag allows the image specified in the 'src' attribute to be displayed.  The remaining attributes sets conditions on how the image should be displayed.  The attribute align can have values of left, center, right, top, middle, and bottom.  The first three break a block of text into two blocks and displays the image between the blocks with the specified alignment.  The second three inserts the image within a line of text and aligns the text with the image as specified by the alignment.  The 'alt' attribute specifies text to be displayed in case the image can not be loaded.  The border attribute places a border around the image with the specified number of pixels.  The height attribute forces the image to occupy the specified height.  The hspace attribute forces a specified number of pixels of space between the image and the surrounding text.  The vspace operates similarly to the hspace attribute; however, it places space above and below the image.  The width attribute forces the image to occupy the specified width.

• Ordered List - <OL start="1" type="1"><LI>...</LI>...</OL> - This tag is used to represent a list of items preceeded by an ordinal value.  The first value in the list is given a value indicated by the start attribute.  By default the start number is 1 or the first item.  The second attribute allows the ordinal value to be represented differently.  The following options are available for the 'type' attribute: A - (A, B, C, ...), a - (a, b, c, ...), I - (I, II, III, ...), i - (i, ii, iii, ...) and 1 - (1, 2, 3, ...).  By default the type attribute is 1.  Inside the ordered list tag is the list item tag <LI>...</LI> which separate the individual entries of the list. Ordered and unordered lists can be embedded within each other.

• Unordered List - <UL type="circle"><LI>...</LI>...</UL> - This tag is used to represent a list of items preceeded by an ordinal value.  The type attribute allows the item indicator to be specified.  The following options square, circle, and disc are available for the 'type' attribute.  By default the type attribute is disc.  Inside the ordered list tag is the list item tag <LI>...</LI> which separate the individual entries of the list. Ordered and unordered lists can be embedded within each other.

• Table - <Table align="left" border="1" cellpadding="0"><TR><TD>...</TD>...</TR>...</Table> - This tag is used to represent a table of data items.  The align attribute can take the values of left, center, and right with left being the default value.  The border attribute allows the thickness of the line between data to be specified.  By default this value is one.  The cellpadding attribute allows space between the border and the data to be specified.  Inside the table tag is the table row tag <TR>...</TR> which partitians data into separate rows.  Within the row tags is the table data tag <TD>...</TD> with separates the individual entries of data.

Special Symbols

• Symbols - Since HTML uses the characters '<' and '&' for special purposes, it is necessary to access these characters through a special sequence.  The special sequence begins with an '&' followed by a series of characters and terminated with a ';'.  Below is a table of special sequences supported by WebRespond.

• Unicode - A unicode character can be inserted into the text by using the sequence of &#nnn; where nnn is a decimal number.  This method is used above to give a ÷ by using the code &#247;.  Numbers up to 255 should give a consistent result will all systems and provide an opportunity to display a larger variety of special characters.  The number of digits can be more than 3; however, the results will depend on your web browser's support for unicode.
